Free Articles
Clarion Magazine began publication in February 1999, and thanks to the support of Clarion developers in over 75 countries, has grown into the most comprehensive source of Clarion programming information anywhere. The Clarion Magazine web site, which also includes two years worth of articles originally published in Clarion Online, contains over 1000 fully searchable articles on Clarion programming. In book form, that would take up about two feet of shelf space.
Clarion Magazine publishes more or less continuously, with articles covering all aspects of Clarion application development, from the basics of using the Application Generator to hard core hand code, and everything in between. Clarion Magazine is more than just a static repository of information, however. Subscribers can attach comments to articles, search for articles, participate in weekly surveys, and more.
I'm confident you'll find Clarion Magazine an indispensable resource.

Z has blogged about the successful resolution of the deeply nested window problem in the new IDE, which means that the AppGen is expected to go to third party developers "within the next few days," and to beta program participants shortly after.

Bob Zaunere has a blog post up with a video showing the new AppGen in action. Z also discusses the holdup in the release, specifically to do with deeply nested windows in the IDE and calls to the Windows API via WinForms. There's also a second video covering the new Application Pad. Projected release to third party vendors for testing is 7-10 days.

OSCON: Orbited Pushes Data To Web Pages
Orbited is an implementation of Comet, and in programming terms Comet is a web application model where the client, via Javascript, keeps an open connection back to the server. This allows the server to push data back to the client without having to first wait for a request.

Atlassian's Dave O'Flynn announced a new (and as yet unnamed) open source identify management project at OSCON. Atlassian's effort is intended to address the shortcomings of existing identification systems such as LDAP, SAML and OpenID.

OSCON: Open Source Gains Ground In The Enterprise
An O'Reilly Radar report released today estimates that perhaps 10% of all new IT jobs involve at least some open source software. The report cites explosive growth in open source projects, draws on analysis of job posting data and considers a number of case studies.

Video of New Application Generator
Bob Z has posted a video showing the new Application Generator. Features demonstrated include automatic conversion of applications and dictionaries from C6 to C7, the Applications pad, generating apps without loading the application, the file schema pad updating ad the procedure changes, the window designer, the new formula editor, multiple instances of the IDE open at once, multi-app solutions, generating all apps in a solution, opening multiple applications at once in a single instance of the IDE (very cool!). Overall the AppGen interface is familiar but somewhat flattened via the use of tabs.

BLOG: Clarion.NET Beta Released
The Clarion.NET beta has been released! As with C7 there's no AppGen yet but a C6 wizard is included which will generate a Clarion.NET application from your dictionary. You can explore and modify the source code using Clarion.NET. You can write console and WinForms apps from scratch, as well as ASP.NET and mobile apps. The IDE also accommodates C# and VB.NET. SV has opened a new newsgroup called softvelocity.public.clarionsharp. Details to follow.

C7 Goes Out To CSP Subscribers On Sept 4
SoftVelocity has announced it will release the current C7 alpha to Core Subscription Program (CSP) subscribers on Tuesday, Sept 4, 2007. From Bob Z's blog entry it appears this release will include the Dictionary Editor and the new Dictionary Diagram tool, with the AppGen to follow at a later date. As alpha participants have found, it's relatively easy to create C7 versions of existing C6 apps even without the AppGen, although maintenance has to be done in C6. Source code apps can already be maintained entirely in C7. Runtime library enhancements in C7 include Unicode and ClearType support, tabbed MDI windows, XP styles, new sheet/tab styles, and encryption support in the Topspeed driver. The alpha includes C6 template updates to conditionally support C7 features when the code is compiled with the C7 compiler. Bob has also posted blog entries showing details of the Dictionary Editor and the Data Diagram tool.

Aussie DevCon: Bob Zaunere's Opening Session
In his opening session at the Aussie DevCon in Sydney, Australia, Bob Zaunere showed the Clarion 7 IDE, including the dictionary editor, visual data designer, and some aspects of the new AppGen. He also demonstrated Clarion.NET apps for ASP.NET and mobile devices. Russ Eggen reports.

Clarion Magazine Wants Your TXAs!
Clarion Magazine is looking for TXAs from real-world applications for an upcoming Clarion 101 article on embed points. All TXAs will be kept confidential and will only be used to collect statistics on which embed points are most often used. To contribute a TXA just open your app, choose File|Export Text, and send the resulting TXA to ed@clarionmag.com. Please do not send apps or data dictionaries, just TXAs.

David Harms To Speak at ETC 2004
David Harms, Clarion Magazine's publisher, will be giving a presentation on XML at the East Tennessee Clarion Conference and Gathering (also known as ETC 2004). As David's presentation is immediately prior to the Cajun Cookout, attendees are requested to keep drooling to a minimum. Nothing unnerves a presenter more than that hungry dog look.

Clarion 5.507 Service Release 7 (Final candidate)
The Final Release candidate for Clarion 5.507 is now available for download. This build resolves a problem in Microsoft Windows XP compatibility and includes several additional fixes since the Jan 9 Release. This release can be downloaded by all customers, but SoftVelocity is naming it a candidate release while 3rd party developers update their add-on tools as needed. The East Tennessee Clarion Conference got rolling Tuesday with an excellent presentation by James Fortune, who soldiered on despite technical difficulties. This is a very cool thread manager which is extremely easy to use. It's also unusual in that it allows you to completely bypass the usual START() parameter limits. With this thread manager you can pass any data type to the START()ed procedure.
